Facebook is launched in Cambridge.

Originally Thefacebook, it is created by roommates Dustin Moscovitz, Edward Saverin, and Mark Zuckerberg in Suite H33 in Harvard University’s Kirkland House. The first popular social media networking site on the Internet, it is an outgrowth of Facemash and attracts some 1,200 college student users in 24 hours. Zuckerberg soon drops out of Harvard and moves the company to California. The company makes its Initial Public Offering on the stock market on May 18, 2012.
